Hello again!

I've been meaning to start posting on this blog once more, and it seems more important now since the tornado hit Joplin. However, in the aftermath of the storm, I felt the presence of yet another photographer in the midst of the storm-ravaged town would just be another inconvenience. The recovery efforts are going strong, and Joplin is now getting into the rebuilding phase. With that in mind, I believe the time is right to start back up. Victoria and I are not as close to Joplin as we have been in the past, and taking pictures involves a special trip to town. We have to take photos when we can get them. The photos might be slow coming, and we might have some gaps in time between each one, but they will be here soon.

Wilder's on Main St. is a piano bar/restaurant. It has been in Joplin since 1929. I've never eaten there myself (a bit too expensive for a poor college student like myself), but I hear the food is excellent.

I took this photo at George Washington Carver National Monument, not far from Joplin. This pond is home to many interesting animals and makes a lovely addition to the monument itself.

Today was a gorgeous day, getting up to over 70 degrees. If not for the Superbowl it would have been a great day to fly kites in the park. This one apparently got stuck in a tree.

Theme Day

It is the first of the month and theme day once again. This month's theme is "When people think of my city, they think of ________."

This was a difficult one for me. What do people think of when they think of Joplin? Do people think of Joplin? I considered many different alternative perspectives to take.

Should I focus on Joplin and its place in outlaw lore? The lawlessness of the 1800's and the popular hideout of those like Bonnie and Clyde? Or should I focus on the prosperous mining days that saw a boom in population and in reputation?

No, ultimately Joplin's main claim to fame is this street:

Route 66 cuts right through the middle of Joplin, making up our 7th Street. I'd have to say that this is what people usually think of when (and if!) they think of Joplin. What do you think of?

It is quite cold in Joplin right now (it's currently about 14 F...brrr), but we have seen very little winter precipitation this year (almost no snow at all). That's why it came as some surprise when I saw these icicles on Tuesday late afternoon.

Most farmers around the area hay their land. Sometimes if the weather is right, we'll get a second harvest. It's pretty cold here right now, so I thought I'd share a couple of round hay bales from a warmer time just a few months back.

Protecting Tourists

This museum was closed during a trip along the outskirts of Joplin's Route 66, but it deserves a trip back. The museum was dedicated to Superman, but it also hosted a deli/ice cream shop! The museum is located in Carterville, which has mingled into the whole northeast Joplin lore. I want to say, "Like, how cool is this?" but, I'll refrain.

Mission Hills

This building is known as the Mission Hills Mansion on the campus of Missouri Southern. It was built by the owner/operator of one of the largest zinc mines in the United States, which was located just across the street. The "mansion" was built in the late 1920s and designed after several buildings the owner had seen during his trips to South and Central America. The land and the home were bought for the expansion of the college in the 1970s. The building was then turned into offices and later left empty. Today, it is being remodeled to house the alumni offices. The rock sidewalk is also original.

Hearnes Hall

Hearnes Hall was one of the first buildings designed for Missouri Southern. It houses the business offices and the Philosophy and English departments. In the past, it was home to The Chart, the campus newspaper and its old printing press. The building has not had any major remodeling in the past 30 years except for one new office on the second floor. The building is named after Governor Hearnes, who helped bring this four-year college to Joplin. Above are cirrus clouds. Personally, I love this walkway as it is not only one of the most strenuous, but it's also one of the shadiest.

Jane Chinn

Jane Chinn was one of the oldest hospitals of in the area until is shut down several years ago. Now it's being turned into a retirement home. This side of the building still looks like it did before remodeling began. The windows, though they are new, reflect the style of the old windows. Rumors that this place is haunted have been dispelled by workers who have kept it from falling into disrepair.

This is a call back to the warmer days when fall was just settling in. These are young mushrooms, and, even though they are quite large at this stage, they are hard to identify properly because of the lack of a gill at this age. The likely suspect is the Horse Mushroom, which is quite common for this habitat. It can grow quite large, and has a stunning color. Anyway, this isn't a nature blog, but this wasn't exactly a "nature" picture either. I just like the setting. That's Webster Hall at Missouri Southern in the background.

Praying Hands

Everything seems to be in reference to the Praying Hands. They are on top of a tall hill in King Jack Park, just on the edge of Webb City and Joplin. Can you believe a 19-year-old built this? He persuaded the city to let him build on this then-desolate area.

Old Tracks, New Paths

Old tracks like these used to carry passenger trains from Joplin to surrounding towns. These small trains were supplements to the trolley system that ran through town. The trains and trolleys were shut down in the mid 1900s. These old tracks are sprawled around still, but have a useful purpose. Beginning in the next couple of months, the tracks will be torn up and turned into walking/biking paths adding up to more than 15 miles between Joplin and Carthage.

Hatten Park

One nice part about this area is the way the community holds to the past. This is an old shower room and pool administration facility. The building has been emptied out and nearly abandoned. However, the pool itself has been paved over to create a basketball court for the community. I also think it looks kinda creepy now, but I bet it was pretty popular back in the day.

Hatten Park was built in 1933 and named after A.D. Hatten, a local mine owner who took over management of the Webb City Bank. The park is located near the exact center of town and was dedicated 40 years after the land was purchased for the city. As Victoria has noted before, Webb City and Joplin are growing closer and closer together.

As some of you may have noticed, there is another name in the profile section of Joplin Daily Photo. In the last few months my life has become almost too busy to post regularly on this blog, and obviously I've only managed to post once or twice a week in the last month or so. I hate to see Joplin Daily Photo die out just because I don't have the time to keep it up properly. So, as of today I have some help in the form of a fellow photographer, my good friend Nate (aka, Missouri_Wilderness).

He is a history buff, an avid nature lover (check out his nature photos here), and has an interest in a mind-boggling amount of things, so he should be able to put a little more historical information into this blog. I'll still post photos when I can (and I'll try to do as much as I can), but Nate will be doing a large share of the posting as well. Between the two of us we can surely meet the "one photo per day" rule.

So, if you all will join me in welcoming Missouri_Wilderness to Joplin Daily Photo and the City Daily Photoblog family. I'm sure he'll fit in well.

Sorry that I haven't posted in a while, but I (like tens of thousands of local residents) have been without power the last few days. The Joplin area was hit by an ice storm, yet again. This one wasn't as bad, but we saw far greater power outages this time. Many of the houses look like this, with the added danger of trees and downed power lines in the roads.

Today is theme day in the City Daily Photo Blog community, and this month's theme is the color blue. There are flashes of blue to be seen all over Joplin, but I chose this sidewalk from (very) nearby Cartersville. It was such a sunny, bright day that everything seemed to be flooded with light, giving the sidewalk a blueish tint.

One of my favorite places to go in the Joplin area is Prairie State Park. At one time over one-third of Missouri was covered in prairie (where bison and elk roamed freely), and some state organizations are making an effort to restore some of this native prairie. Along with the restoration of the prairie is the restoration of the native animals who once lived on it.

Though cactus is not generally thought of when one mentions the midwest/Ozarks, we do have quite a few Eastern Prickly Pear cactus growing wild around the area. Often you find them in drier glade areas (though the last few days have not exactly been hospitable to me or the cactus--cold and rainy, so you'll have to excuse my lack of new photos).

An empty soccer field. In this area quite a few children play soccer, but their interest in the sport seems to wane as they approach junior high and high school. It seems like the soccer fields are empty much more often than the football fields or baseball diamonds.
